The full Murfreesboro City Council was present for the first time in weeks, just one day after Mayor Bragg announced that he would not be seeking re-election for the office of Mayor, a point which he reiterated at the October 17th meeting.

The group purchased three new treadmills for the Parks & Recreation Commission, approved the Murfreesboro Airport Commission's recommendation to accept the Tennessee Aeronautics Division's grants for both a runway extension as well as a road relocation, and scheduled public hearings to consider rezoning along Salem Highway and St. Andrews Drive, an annexation petition along Salem Highway and Veterans Parkway, and amending of additional property along Veterans Parkway.  All were scheduled for November 21st.

Council also took time to acknowledge the passing of Mary Scales, the first African-American member of the Murfreesboro City Council, and mother of curent council member Madelyn Scales-Harris.  This was the first full meeting of the council since her passing.

Finally, several representatives from Murfreesboro City Schools presented the City Schools Technology Plan, outlining procurement of new computers and additional digital devices to prepare for the move to online testing.  Tennessee is the 42nd state to adopt such plans.

Over at the Rutherford County Commission’s October meeting, retired U.S. Army Colonel Jeff Davidson issued a resolution honoring veterans, as well as a heads up on some upcoming Veteran’s Day events.

No reports were issued by four of the seven committees, but the Budget, Finance, & Investment Committee authorized a contract with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to receive the Teen Driver Safety Grant, and the Public Works and Planning Committee approved a new speed limit of 40 mph for along Puckett Road.
