Mrs. Tennessee United States LaShan Mathews Dixon will preside over the Hometown Heroes Walk for Children

Mrs. Tennessee United States LaShan Mathews Dixon will preside over the Hometown Heroes Walk for Children Awards Ceremony at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 20 at Murfreesboro Civic Plaza.

During the ceremony, the Child Advocacy Center will honor community leaders who have dedicated their careers to protecting children.

This will be Dixon's last appearance as Mrs. Tennessee United States because she will pass on her crown to her successor that weekend.

Dixon works as the assistant public health director for the Rutherford County Health Department where she has a "burning desire to be an advocate for women and for those underserved in my community."

"As a leader in this community I want to directly affect change by participating in programs of service impacting countless lives," Dixon said. "I believe it is important to help abused children heal while being a compass guide to help them through any life situation."

Executive Director Sharon De Boer said the Child Advocacy Center welcomes Mrs. Tennessee. "The Child Advocacy Center is excited to have local Hometown Hero, Mrs. Tennessee LaShan Dixon, as the Master of Ceremonies for the Hometown Heroes Walk for Children."

The third annual Hometown Heroes Walk for Children will be held on Friday, April 20. The event will begin with registration from 11:00-11:45 a.m. at the Murfreesboro Civic Plaza. The walk will conclude with a picnic lunch at the Child Advocacy Center, located at 1040 Samsonite Blvd. Walkers may shuttle from the Child Advocacy Center to the Civic Plaza from 10:30-11:00 a.m.

People may register and walk for free at www.cacrutherford.org. The event presenting sponsor is Project One Four, a David Price Foundation. Event T-shirts may be purchased for $10.

Dixon earned her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management, Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, and her Master's degree in Health and Human Performance at MTSU. She is an Adjunct Professor at MTSU in the College of Health and Human Performance.

County Mayor Ernest Burgess and Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland proclaimed Dec. 4, 2017 as "LaShan Mathews Dixon Day" for her professional and personal commitment to improving the quality of life for others in the community.

Her platform program as Mrs. Tennessee United States, Beauty Behind Bars™ is a self-esteem program created to help women and girls break away from mental incarceration, self-imprisonment related to low self-esteem, doubt, depression, suicide, and dream killing.

Dixon is a member of First Baptist Church-Murfreesboro where she is active in Dance Ministry. She is a resident of Murfreesboro along with her husband, Lamar, and daughter, Londyn. She is a member of Pi Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
