Twenty additional personnel from Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department became Child Safety Seat Technicians Wednesday after completing a three day course at the Tennessee Fire and Codes Academy in Deason, Tennessee.

The final requirement of the class was a Child Safety Seat Inspection Station at Station 9 on Cason Lane where students received the opportunity to experience first-hand, installing a car seat and instructing parents how to do so correctly and safely.

The students installed 23 car seats in the two hours allotted for the inspection station.

“The amount of seats the students were able to install was fantastic. Some classes may only get three to four cars,” said Carl Peas, the first of MFRD’s personnel to become a certified technician.

“With the addition of these technicians, we will now have 46 total personnel that are able to assist the public with car seat inspections and installations,” said Chief Cumbey Gaines.

On average, 90 percent of child safety seats are installed incorrectly. If you missed Wednesday’s Child Safety Seat Inspection Station, there are other opportunities to participate. MFRD will be at GFS Marketplace on Saturday, June 1 from 1:00-4:00 pm.
