Murfreesboro lost a great friend and leader Thursday night (5/19/2016) with the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Schley "Slick" Frazer. He was very active in the Rotary Club of Murfreesboro where he served as a direct, president in 1995-1996, and governor of district 6760 in 2006-2007.

"Slick" was career military serving in the Army and was sent to Murfreesboro to head the Reserve Officers Training Program at Middle Tennessee State University. It didn't take long for he and his wife, Freda Sue, to fall in love with the community.

They made this home and became active at First United Methodist Church. The area had everything to keep his wife and two sons captivated: hunting, fishing, athletic events and lots of history.

After MTSU, he became involved in insurance and then farming.

In recent years, the 73-year old had been battling Parkinson's disease and related illnesses.

Comments From Friends

Murfreesboro Rotary President John Dietrich said, "Slick truly exemplified Rotary's Four Way Test in how he lived his life in service to his family, community, and nation. He was an outstanding Rotarian and human being and was very instrumental in making our Rotary Club what it is today."

General Session Judge Ben Hall McFarlin commented, "Slick Frazier will missed greatly by all who knew him. He was a champion of our veterans and a true gentleman. in addition to being an exemplary military man, he was an ardent student of military history."

Breakfast Rotarian and Community Leader Phil Barnett noted, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Slick. I first met Slick many years ago when he was our Rotary District Governor. Slick and his lovely wife Freda were Mr.and Mrs. Rotary. As the Ombudsman for the Tennessee State Veterans Home I have had the pleasure to get to know and enjoy Slick and Freda. Two finer people do not exist. I will miss you Slick. I will miss our visits and our conversations. I know you are in a better place and I am sure you are already filling out the paperwork for the Rotary Club of Heaven. God Bless you my friend, and God Bless your wonderful wife Freda and your family. You will be missed!"

Past Club President Bart Walker remembered, "Slick and Freda Sue were both examples of Service Above Self, and always wanted to share their love of Rotary. At the 2011 RI convention, Slick was beginning to have difficulty in getting around. That did not deter him from showing me around the massive New Orleans' Convention Center and then going with me on the Charles Street streetcar. He made Rotary come alive!"

Family Staffing Solutions CEO, Founder and Rotarian Becci Bookner penned, "Lt. Colonel Frazer was an officer, a gentleman and an exemplary Rotarian. He has touched many lives in this community. He will be missed. He leaves a legacy filled with his character, his acts of integrity, his encouragement to so many of those people with whom he worked and so many of his friends in Rotary.

The wonderful memories of working with him to coordinate the District Conference for his term as District Governor were so special then and now they are a treasure. He and Freda Sue were so incredibly committed to this project, it made all of us work a little bit harder to make sure it was successful for him and for District 6760. His military style was ever on display. He gave you a job and expected it to be done on time and in perfect style. You just didn't want to disappoint this amazing man.

I think Slick understood what was really important in life. The beautiful and uniquely designed home, the view of the surrounding land, the stories of his military career allowed those of us lucky enough to spend time with the Frazers to see a couple who lived life to its fullest. Slick was a very special person and so proud of his family. It is an honor to have worked with him and called him a friend. We wish the most sincere blessings and peace to Freda Sue during this difficult time. I stand in awe of her commitment to her husband and family. She is the definition of a devoted wife and a mother. We thank you and love you for sharing Slick with us during the past few years."

Golden Anniversary

Last September (2015), "Slick" and Freda Sue celebrated their 50th anniversary at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Home on Compton Road, where he had been living. His wife and two adult sons were by his side during this proud moment.
