A 27-year old Murfreesboro man has been accused of attempted murder. The accusation came as the result of a domestic violence situation that unfolded on Shoreham Street Sunday morning at 4.

Victim Sherrita Montgomery told police she got home late and fell asleep in her vehicle parked in her driveway. That was when Steven Terrell Akins woke her up by walking up to her car. 33-Year old Montgomery told officers that when she saw Akins, she tried to start her car and drive away due to previous domestic disputes.

As Montgomery was trying to start her car, Akins allegedly started striking her window and eventually her, with a hammer. The report confirmed that Montgomery was seriously injured in the attack. The victim was struck in the right eye by the hammer.

After Montgomery finally got her car started, she managed to drive herself to the hospital.  Once at the hospital, she told police that Akins stated, “That’s what you get for talking crazy.” According to a domestic violence report, medical staff at the local hospital advised Montgomery that she would likely lose her right eye as a result of the hammer attack. She was then transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Fugitive Squad Investigators Randy Morrow and Jack Keisling apprehended suspect Steven Akins on a charge of attempted first-degree.  Akins, 27, of Haven Drive was apprehended in Antioch after a three-day investigation by Keisling and Morrow. He is being held on $250,000 bond in Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. A hearing is set Aug. 8 in General Sessions Court.
