A Murfreesboro Police detective testified Tuesday a murder defendant didn't kill his victim in self-defense during a February drug deal.

Detective Larry Maples said wounds found in an autopsy of Tijuandre Garrett, as well as blood spatters at an apartment where he was found, don't match the explanation Juan Carlos Carachure gave police when he was arrested on first-degree murder and aggravated robbery charges. Carachure told police he shot Garrett in a drug deal but only to defend himself, according to testimony

"Various statements he made in the interview led us to doubt his story," Maples testified in a General Sessions Court hearing.

Judge Barry Tidwell found probable cause to bind the case to a Rutherford County grand jury. Carachure, 23, of Nashville, is being held in jail without bond.

Maples testified he was called to an apartment at 1306 Eagle St. on Feb. 7 around 6 p.m. to investigate a shooting. Garrett, 20, was found suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest and arm and was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital where he died.
