(MURFREESBORO) American Heart Association Rutherford County Director Margaret Woods spoke to the Murfreesbroro Rotary Club on Tuesday (8/6/2019).
She said, "Most people survive their first heart attack and return to their normal lives, enjoying many more years of productive activity. But experiencing a heart attack does mean that you need to make some changes."
She told Rotary club members, "It all sounds simple, but people are reluctant to change, and heart disease is the nation's number one killer."
Change Your Lifestyle
- Tobacco: stop smoking, vaping or chewing.
- Eat healthy: A healthy diet is one of the best weapons you have to fight cardiovascular disease.
- Lower high blood pressure: Shake that salt habit, take your medications as recommended by your doctor and get moving. An optimal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg.
- Exercise: Research has shown that at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity can help lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and keep your weight at a healthy level.
- Maintain healthy weight: Learn about healthy food portions, Body Mass Index, keep a chart of the food you eat.
- Manage diabetes:At least 68% of people over the age of 65 years of age with diabetes die of some form of liver disease; 16% die of stroke.
- Manage Stress: Stress in a person's life that may affect the risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
- Limit use of alcohol: Reduce stressLimit alcohol: If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. This means an average of one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
