The investigation shows that Pillow, who had just gotten off the bus, stepped into its path as she attempted to cross 5th Avenue from east to west. The bus was moving to cross Charlotte Avenue with a green light. Pillow began to cross the street against a "Don't Walk" signal at the intersection. Her action is the primary contributing factor to the collision, according to Metro Police.

After being hit, Pillow was pinned underneath the bus as it traveled a short distance before stopping.
