City Council held a public hearing Thursday to consider zoning over 70 acres located along New Salem Highway as commercial and residential property, where some residents voiced concerns.

The property in mention belongs to the Waite family off New Salem.

Spence Creek Lane resident Wayne Overman spoke on behalf of the community. NewsRadioWGNS' Jackson Jones has more...

Overman gave his thoughts on the outcome from the meeting...

He also gave a brief backstory of why this annexation is happening...

The community for the most part was in favor of the annexation. One of biggest problems they said was the area being at capacity for additional apartment development when homes are already being built in the area.

Originally, the property was planned as Residential Multi-Family Twelve (RM-12), but was then proposed as Residential Zero-Lot Line (RZ), which is single family.

The council voted in favor for the change, and will meet sometime next week for continuing the process. Vice Mayor Doug Young said, "The solution is clear..the neighbors are not going to get apartments." Council member Rick Lalance said, "It's an awfully fair proposal."

Overman said apartments may be eventually built in the area, but at least tall ones won't be looking down their neighborhood.
