Sheriff Arnold told WGNS at one point the man was armed with a gun that he claims to have lost in the river that runs near Gum Road. The Sheriff’s Office spent time looking for that weapon on Wednesday. No word on if it was recovered.

Deputies received a call about a suicidal man armed with a 20-gauge shotgun about 11:30 a.m. in the Gum community off U.S. Highway 41 South ( Manchester Highway ). Deputies located his abandoned truck towed the vehicle from the area so that he could not gain access to it again.

Tennessee Highway Patrol’s helicopter joined deputies on the ground in searching for the man.

Sheriff Arnold called off the aerial search for the man after the school students were released from school at the end of the day.
