New Year's Day 5K

With temps in the mid 50s, cloudy and misty--the Second Annual Murfreesboro New Year's Day 5K at Barfield Park was another success. Melinda Tate told NewsRadio WGNS that 408 runners finished the race. (race results below)

  • The first runner across the finish line was 35-year old Brenden Moody of Van Wert, Ohio. His chip time was 17-minutes 12-seconds.
  • Second overall was Murfreesboro's 17-year old Daniel Smith who completed in 17-minutes 27-seconds.
  • And the third to cross the line was 16-year old Leighton Daniel of Rockvale who completed the 5K run in 18-minutes and 27-seconds.

The 5k is a part of Mayor Shane McFarland's "Better Boro Project", a city-wide initiative designed to promote healthy eating, encourage outdoor recreation, and provide unique and accessible wellness activities.

The race was electronically timed with overall and age group winners awarded in both male and female categories. Every finisher received a finisher's medal. Walkers and strollers also participated.
