Oakland's quest to defend their 2018 state championship fell short at Maryville in a 12-0 loss.
As usual, the games between these two schools are close and hard hitting. This game was no exception.
The Rebels took a 3-0 lead with just under five minutes to go in the first half. Then, the Patriots were backed up near their goal line when quarterback Kody Sparks was sacked for a safety. That gave Maryville a 5-0 lead at the half.
On the Patriots' first drive of the second half, they drove the ball to the Rebels eight yard line. On fourth-and-seven, the pass fell incomplete. It wound up being their best opportunity score in the game.
In the fourth quarter with Maryville driving in the red zone, Oakland's defense forced a turnover on downs when they atempted a fourth-and-two. But the Patriots turned the ball over on the next play. It was just a few plays later, with 2:12 to go in the game, the Rebels scored their lone touchdown behind Tennessee commitment Tee Hodge.
Oakland had 122 yards offense in the game. 99 on the ground and 23 in the air. Jordan Brown had 43-yards on 12 carries and Victor Stephenson had seven carries for 34-yards.
The Patriots' 26-game win steak was snapped in the loss as their season ends with a 13-1 record. This year's seniors were 54-4 in four seasons, including a state championship, a state runner up and two semifinal appearances.
Maryville will face Ravenwood, which defeated Houston, in the Class 6A State Championship Game.
