No City Property Tax Increase; Hotel/Motel Tax Nixed

No property tax increase for Murfreesboro residents. The city council voted to keep the tax rate in place for the 18th consecutive year at their Thursday night meeting. The city's proposed budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year is 148-point-two-million dollars.

The council also considered a proposal that would increase the hotel/motel tax by two-point-seven-five-percent. NewsRadio WGNS' Jackson Jones was there to get reaction...

Rothchild, during the public hearing, said Murfreesboro stands to lose convention business to cities like Pigeon Forge, which has more attractions and a lower hotel/motel tax rate. Councilman Eddie Smotherman suggested other revenue raising ideas and a possible council retreat to consider them. Mayor Shane McFarland agreed and a date was set for August 17th to consider ideas.
