Commending Middle Tennessee Electric Membership for lessening potential impact on neighboring residents, the Murfreesboro Planning Commission nodded approval Wednesday for the utility’s 150-acre planned commercial development. MTEMC, which provides electricity to some 5,000 people in Rutherford and surrounding counties, plans to consolidate its corporate headquarters and service facility – which are located separately on New Salem Highway and St. Andrews Drive – at the Veterans Parkway site in west Murfreesboro near Berkshire neighborhood. MTEMC spokesman Chris Jones says they met with neighbors to improve plans to cut noise and visibility. MTEMC prefers the site because it is centrally located in its service area, has good access to I-24 and state Route 840, enabled consolidation and allows enough room to fulfill the utility’s 100-year vision. Planning Director Joseph Aydelott pointed out that by seeking approval for a planned commercial development MTEMC must go back through the planning process each time it makes changes to its site plan. The plan must be approved next by the City Council before MTEMC can start work.
