Region Championship Softball & Baseball Roundup

Rutherford County softball and baseball teams went two-and-two in region championship games. County rivals Smyrna and Riverdale met in the championship game, heard on WGNS State Farm Prep Sports last (Wednesday) night. The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the first to jump on top. Riverdale added one in the second. But it was a bottom of the fifth went Smyrna plated three more runs that put the game out of reach. Smyrna wins their first ever region championship with a 5-1 win over Riverdale. That puts Riverdale on the road at Coffee County Friday night in the sectional game, while Smyrna hosts Soddy Daisy.

In baseball, Riverdale defeated Tullahoma 2-1, behind a one-hitter from pitcher Brady Puckett. Tied one-one, Kaleb Swayze's first home run of the year gave the Warriors a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Riverdale will host Ooltewah Friday night and you can here that game here on WGNS.

Despite beating Upperman in the previous four meetings, Central Magnet dropped a 6-5 decision last night. They'll play at Sequoyah in Dayton Friday night, trying to earn their first ever trip to the Spring Fling.
