Monday, May 11, 2015 11:07 pm
Siegel softball and Central Magnet baseball advance in region semifinal play while Riverdale baseball and softball along with MTCS baseball teams are eliminated. Smyrna's baseball was suspended until Tuesday due to storms.
Up 9-2 in the top of the 7th, the Siegel Lady Stars held off a five-run Tullahoma rally to defeat the Lady Cats 9-7 on the road. With the win, they advance to the region finals at Coffee County on Wednesday. We have a podcast of the final four innings of the game from Scott Shasteen from WHMT - Tullahoma and heard on NewsRadio WGNS after our Riverdale / Coffee County coverage.
A solo homer by Tori Bell of Coffee County was all they needed to defeat Riverdale 1-nothing in softball action. The loss ended the season for the Lady Warriors.
To baseball, Central Magnet advanced to the region finals for the third year in a row, defeating Signal Mountain 7-1 at Tiger Plex. James Touchton pitched a complete game while Reed Sullivan's three-run home run lifted the Tigers to the win. They'll travel to Chattanooga Christian on Wednesday and play for a region championship.
Riverdale baseball dropped a 7-5 decision to the Columbia Lions to see their quest for a fourth straight sectional berth end.
MTCS lost a 2-1 decision at Nashville Christian as the Cougar's season drew to a close.
Smyrna baseball jumped on Lawrence County 4-nothing after the top of the first inning. Then, a storm rolled in and the game was suspended until Tuesday night at 6pm. The game will resume, per TSSAA rule, in the bottom of the first with Smyrna ahead. A win by the Bulldogs would put them playing Columbia at home on Wednesday night.
Teams playing Wednesday also receive an automatic berth to the sectionals on Friday. It's another elimination round with winners advancing to next week's Spring Fling.
NewsRadio WGNS will have region coverage on Wednesday on State Farm Prep Sports. The game and time will be posted on our website late Tuesday.
