(MURFREESBORO) Murfreesboro business leader Revonda Rucker passed away Tuesday (5/26/2020). Her lifetime dream became a reality in October, 1994 when she founded Rucker Memorial Chapel. After that, she helped others through challenging times for over a quarter of a century.

For those who ever talked to her about the funeral home, she would say, "It's not my business, it is God's. The staff and I try to be good stewards while serving the families in their time of need. God gets the glory in all things!"

She was a calm and gracious person who practiced "love one another".

In fact, the Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church was on the top of her list. Also up there were two WGNS' radio broadcasts: Mary Glass and her "To God be The Glory" broadcast along with "Straight from the Heart Ministry" that was started by Bobbie Hayes. The Holloway High School Class of 1971 was also a part of the sunshine that showed with pride every time she spoke.

"To God Be The Glory" hostess Mary Glass noted, "I truly thank God for allowing Revonda Rucker the time that was well spent on earth with us."

Nancy Smith commented, "I was fortunate to be able to work with Revonda at the VA. She truly cared for her patients and their families as well as fellow employees. I don't remember ever seeing her without a smile. Our community has lost a special lady."

Local developer Wayne Belt said, "Our church, Believers' Chapel, sold our former building to Revonda. She was a joy to work with and very kind to us as we built a new building. She let us continue to use the auditorium until our new building was completed. She was a great business women and excelled in whatever she did. Revonda will be missed."

One of Revonda Rucker's proudest moments was when the Murfreesboro branch of the NAACP presented her with the Civic Leader Award at the 2014 Freedom Fund Banquet.

It was at the banquet that the community learned more about her, and how in those early years--she divided her time between caring for patients in her nursing career at the VA, and caring for families as they grieved the loss of loved ones.

During the Freedom Fund dinner at the Patterson Community Center, Rucker shared, "Caring for others has been a passion in my life. Nursing was my initial career path and it remains a source of joy. I've been inspired by colleagues and the families that I assist. Serving as a funeral director allows me to provide a needed service to support families during times of loss and transition."

Revonda Rucker earned her funeral home directors license in 1991, and later became the first African-American female to be a sole proprietor of a funeral home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

She also served as recording secretary of Rutherford County's Democratic Women. Revonda was also active with member the Eastern Star's Venus Chapter 61.

Arrangements for Revonda Rucker are incomplete at this time, and will be announced later from Rucker Memorial Chapel, 1505 Bradyville Pike. CLICK HERE
