Rutherford Books from Birth has mailed over 500,000 books to the children of Rutherford County since 2006. Mitch Federman, president of Rutherford County Books from Birth comments, “By partnering with the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, we are able to provide a free book a month for 5 years to each child enrolled in the program.” He continued, “research has shown that participants in our program begin Kindergarten with higher reading, speaking, thinking, and social skills than those that have not participated in our program.”

The program is free to children and parents, but the actual cost of the program is $27 per year, per child, and is split evenly between each county-wide program and the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. This pays for the cost of the books and postage. Books in the program are selected by a panel of early education experts and are purchased through a volume arrangement with Penguin Publishers.

Of course, it takes a bit of fundraising to keep the books coming and Smyrna mother Laura Palmer, whose daughter is enrolled in the program, has decided to do what she can to help.  “My daughter is only a year old and looks forward to receiving her new book every month,” said Palmer. “She’ll be a bookworm before she hits Kindergarten thanks for Rutherford Books from Birth! I thought that this fundraiser would be a fun way for those who benefit from the program to give back while accomplishing a bit of shopping!”

Palmer has arranged a vendor fair on October 26 from 11am-1pm at The Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro (1200 Conference Center Drive) where shoppers can sample goods and services while supporting local businesses. A portion of the proceeds from all goods sold by each vendor will be donated back to Rutherford County Books from Birth. Confirmed vendors include, DoTERRA Oils, Origami Owl, Mary Kay, Thirty One Gifts, Perfectly Posh, Scentsy, Initials Inc., It Works!, Shabby Chic Naturals, Gold Canyon, Barefoot Books, and Lia Sophia, with more being added every day. A silent auction will also be part of the event, where shoppers can bid on items from Painting with a Twist, Roll the Dice, Norrell Skin Care and Safari Pet Resort.

In addition, local music artist and children’s author Skyla Spencer will be signing her newly released book, Skyla’s Hat Adventure, at the fundraiser. The story involves young Skyla, who, when she tries on different hats that belong to her grandma, finds herself in different locations—on different adventures. In this series, Skyla travels and learns about people and places. She learns about occupations and what she thinks she might like to be when she grows up.
