There’s a new push for stiffer penalties for people caught texting while driving. A House subcommittee wants to increase the fine for a second offense to up to $1,000. The penalty is $50 for each offense under current state law, which went on the books five years ago.
The proposal to up the fine is just getting started and will face a long road in the House and Senate even if the subcommittee signs off on it.
