SB: Smyrna Outlasts Siegel; District Race Tightens

As if things weren't interesting enough in the District 7-AAA softball race, they just got more interesting. Smyrna defeated Siegel 6-5 last (Thursday) night with only a half-game lead separating Oakland, Siegel and Smyrna.

The Lady Stars went up 2-nothing in the bottom of the first. The Lady Bulldogs came up in the top of the 2nd with one run and tied it in the top of the 3rd. The big blow was a four-run Smyrna fifth inning. Kristen Hunsicker led off the inning with a double and they put together four more hits in the inning. Siegel was not done, however. They got one run back in the bottom of the fifth and scored two in the seventh before stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

It was a game of high emotion, a rowdy crowd and high drama. At one point in the game, Smyrna coach Sam Sheppard and the home plate umpire got into a heated, face-to-face argument about whether Siegel pitcher Leah Newsome should be removed after two trips by the coaches to the pitcher's circle. The outfield umpire helped to separate the two and even though the home plate umpire signaled Sheppard was ejected from the game, the coach returned as cooler heads prevailed.

A very large crowd of parents, fans and students gave the game a playoff atmosphere. With just a handful of games left before the postseason, the district race is as tight as could be.
