Hang up immediately if you receive a call from the Sheriff's Office asking for payment for missing grand jury.

These calls are simply scams, said Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh.

"The Sheriff's Office will never call you and ask for money for missing grand jury," Fitzhugh said. "If you receive a call like this and have questions, call the Sheriff's Office at 615-898-7770 for information."

Murfreesboro Police Officer Albert Miles reported Wednesday a resident received one of these calls from a man posing as Lt. Reed from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

The caller posing as Lt. Reed told the resident he had a warrant for him for failing to appear before the grand jury. The caller directed the man to buy $1,000 worth of green dot cards and meet him at the Sheriff's Office.

Instead of buying the cards, the resident called Miles who talked on the phone to the man placing the scam call.

Miles reported the scammer identified himself as an officer from the Sheriff's Office. He refused to answer any questions and hung up when Miles told him he was a police officer.

The resident did not lose any money.
