A convicted sex offender was arrested while at Kids Castle in Old Fort Park. 32-year old Kodi Riko Chaney was tracked down by police because of the GPS monitoring device on his ankle. Chaney is currently being monitored by the probation and parole office. When police moved in to question Chaney, he told them he was in the park with his fiancé’s daughter.

Chaney is classified on the registry under the category of “Sexual.” We spoke to Kristin Helm at the TBI about this classification and she told us that under state law, sex offenders are classified as either a violent sexual offender or a sexual offender depending on what they are convicted of. Certain offenses fall under violent sexual offender and others under sexual offender.  Typically, a violent sexual offender has been convicted of a more serious or aggravating offense. They are required to register for life. A sexual offender has been convicted of an offense less aggravating and can apply to be taken off the registry after 15 years.
