Rock climbing and a Zumbathon will help raise funds for sexual assault victims in the Sexual Assault Awareness Event Saturday at the DePaul Building parking lot behind Middle Tennessee Medical Center .

Registration begins at 8 a.m. for a car show and the first Power 5K fun run/walk. Cost is $15 per entry for each event. The walk begins at 9 a.m. with each participant receiving a T-shirt.

Other events include live music and food, a silent auction, a chili cook-off and entertainment.

All proceeds benefit the Sexual Assault Response Team dedicated to helping sexual assault victims, said MTMC Registered Nurse Debbie Curtis who is a sexual abuse nurse examiner and one of the team’s organizers. The team consists of medical staff, the district attorney’s office and law enforcement officers.

When the team was organized in 2008, Curtis said the when someone experiences a sexual assault, they have lost control.

“Someone else has taken their power, control away from them,” Curtis said. “When they come in for exam, we try to give control back to them. We let them guide us. When they are ready to talk, ready to go through exam, that’s the pace we will go. If they would like an advocate with them, they can.
