The local Special Olympics Track and Field Meet will be at MTSU's Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium this Friday (4/13/2018) morning, and local athletes will compete from 10:30 that morning until 1:00 in the afternoon.
Teams of law enforcement officers will run the Olympic torch from Central Magnet School on East Main to the MTSU track starting at 9:30AM.
Once at the stadium, the officers will greet about 525 intellectually disabled athletes from Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City Schools who are competing in the Special Olympics.
After the torch arrives, the opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., followed by a parade of athletes from each school.
Rutherford County Schools Lou Paschall said, "MTSU athletes spend time volunteering to help the Special Olympics athletes. But we still need more volunteers. We expect to have over 500 athletes competing on Friday, and many will be eligible to advance on to the state Summer Games in May."
He explained, "We are using SignUp Genius this year so that volunteers can register for jobs and get all the details. I will be happy to discuss what is needed with anyone who is interested, but the link follows in case people would rather access the information that way:http://www.signupgenius.com/
Paschall noted, "Volunteering to help with this Friday's Special Olympics at MTSU will not only help the community and those involved, but it will help you in more ways than can be imagined."
