Detectives are searching for a North Carolina man who allegedly stole two checks in Rutherford County valued at about $9,000 and cashed the checks in Murfreesboro, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s investigator said Thursday.

Suspect Matthew Smith, 59, of Charlotte, allegedly stole the checks from mailboxes in the county, said Detective Steve Brown. Smith is about 5-feet-5-inches tall and wears a goatee.

Detectives identified the suspect as Smith but are unaware of his location, Detective Brown said.

People who have information about him, his whereabouts or the description of his vehicle are asked to call Detective Brown at 904-3052 or Detective Jamin Humphress at 904-3054.
