Judy Sides will be the next principal of Smyrna West Alternative School. Director of Schools Don Odom made the announcement Thursday, with the recent retirement of Kay Davenport.
Sides has served as an assistant principal at Riverdale High School since 2008. She previously taught sociology, psychology and U.S. History and has a total of 23 years in education.
"Ms. Sides has a strong background in academics and administration," Director Odom said. "What makes her stand out for the alternative school is she looks at the individual child and develops a rapport with them."
Smyrna West Alternative School serves students in grades 6-12 who have discipline issues and have been removed from their zoned schools.
"I am humbled by the opportunity afforded me by Mr. Odom to lead in Rutherford County," Sides said. "I look forward to working closely with Mrs. Davenport to ensure a smooth transition. I am excited to work with a talented and dedicated faculty and staff to continue to serve the students of Smyrna West."
Ms. Sides will work alongside retiring Principal Kay Davenport to transition into the new school year, which begins Aug. 5.
