It took Siegel 12 innings, but they defeated Coffee County on the road in Manchester to win the Region 4-Triple-A title 3-to-1. After being scoreless through 9-innings, in a game heard on NewsRadio WGNS, Siegel struck first in the top of the 10th with the international tiebreaker in effect. That's a running at second base to start each inning. The Lady Raiders come back with one in the bottom of the 10th to keep the game going.
It wasn't until Siegel pitcher Veronica Westfall hit a rope single to left field to score Jensen McElroy in the top of the 12th, followed by a Cede (SAY-dee) Loftis line drive to right field to score Cierra Purvis for another insurance run to put Siegel up 3-to-1. That's when Westfall came in to shut the door on Coffee County. She had 19 strike outs in the game and propelled Siegel to their first region championship since 2009. That year, they finished fourth in the state, losing to eventual state champion Riverdale that year.
The Lady Stars will host Walker Valley in sectional play Friday night. NewsRadio WGNS will have coverage of that game on State Farm Prep Softball. The winner will be in next week's TSSAA Spring Fling.
In other scores, Central Magnet baseball went on the road to Chattanooga Christian and come away with a 11-to-1 win and a region championship. They'll host Sequoyah Friday in the sectionals.
Smyrna baseball dropped a 4-to-3 decision to Columbia and will be forced to go on the road to Soddy Daisy Friday night, with a chance to reach the Spring Fling for the first time since 2007.
