Smyrna Mother Charged With April, 2014 Infant Death

NewsRadio WGNS has learned that the Smyrna Police have made an arrest in an infant death case that dates back to April 8th of last year. The infant's mother, Brittany Marie Wiest, was arrested Wednesday (2/4/2015).

At 12:33 on the afternoon of April 8, 2014, police answered a 911 call about an unresponsive infant at the Village Crest Apartments (916 Needham Drive in Smyrna). They found 59 day old Anakin Leroy-Michael Wiest deceased and extremely underweight. The mother, Brittany Marie Wiest, and her boyfriend, Michael Withers, were inside the apartment.

As part of the investigation, the infant's body was sent to the Forensic Medical Examiner's Office in Nashville for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The examiner's report stated Baby Anakin's cause of death was starvation and dehydration. The manner of death was determined to be homicide.

Smyrna Detective Rick Hall presented the facts of his investigation to the Rutherford County Grand Jury on February 2, 2015. The Grand Jury returned indictments for one count of Aggravated Child Abuse, one count of Aggravated Child Neglect, and one count of Felony Murder.

The deceased infant's mother, Brittany Marie Wiest, was arrested Wednesday (2/4/2015), and her bond was set at $100,000.

Ms. Wiest is currently 24 weeks pregnant with another child and is being detained at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
