Smyrna Rotary Recognizes a State Senator

The Smyrna Rotary Club welcomed State Senator Douglas Henry (D–Nashville) to their Thursday luncheon on June 13, 2013. The distinguished elder statesman has represented the 21st District in Davidson County since the 87th General Assembly in 1971. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives during the 79th General Assembly. He is Vice-Chairman of the Senate Finance, Ways & Means Committee and serves as a member of the Senate Ethics and Fiscal Review Committees.

Douglas Henry graduated with a B.A. and LL.B from Vanderbilt University. He is a former chairman of the Southern Legislative Conference, an organization whose mission is to "foster and encourage intergovernmental cooperation among its 16-member states."

Senator Henry has been an unparalleled standard-bearer for women in Tennessee. He also has long been an advocate for public education and worked to bring charter schools to Tennessee. Senator Henry has stood firmly for a law-abiding Tennessee, from our neighborhoods to the halls of State government and joined with dedicated advocates to preserve our environmental and our historical heritage.

“Senator Henry is the type of legislator we all aspire to be,” said State Representative Mike Sparks (R–Smyrna),following the Smyrna Rotary Club event.

Senator Bill Ketron (R–Murfreesboro) said, “Senator Henry has been a true advocate for fiscal responsibility through many administrations and changes in leadership.”

During his speech to the Rotarians, Senator Henry quipped, “The Republicans have always treated me as well as the Democrats!”

After a legislative career spanning six decades, Senator Henry will leave the state legislature for good next year. He confirmed that he will not seek reelection in 2014, but plans to finish his term in the 108th General Assembly.
