NewsRadio WGNS has learned that at approximately 4:20PM Sunday (12/2/2018) afternoon, Smyrna Police received a call of a stolen silver 4-door Acura speeding away from the Valero Market at the corner of Weakley Lane and Sam Ridley Parkway. In the back seat was a child in a restraint seat. A chase ensued, and ended with a crash.

A horrified father attempted to stop the vehicle as it sped onto Weakley Lane. Another motorist at the market picked up the father and they attempted to catch the stolen vehicle while calling 911.

A Smyrna patrol officer was in the area and began pursuing the stolen Acura. The pursuit continued down Weakley Lane and onto Couchville Pike. It crashed behind a home in the 6000 block of Couchville Pike, and the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot into the woods behind the home. The patrol officer immediately secured the child, who was unharmed, and provided a detailed description of the fleeing suspect.

Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office assisted Smyrna Police in searching for the suspect. The suspect crossed through some woods and fields, but was apprehended in the 5000 block of Henley Road by deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office.

The suspect is 33-year old Corbett L. Newman, was charged with felony Theft of a Vehicle, Driving on a Revoked License, Evading Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, and other charges that may be pending. Newman may be facing charges from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office as well.

Smyrna Police are looking for a potential accomplice. Newman exited the driver's door of the 4-door Acura and entered the stolen truck in the Valero parking lot.

A second person was sitting in the passenger seat of the Acura and crossed the console and entered the driver's seat after Newman exited the Acura.

Smyrna Police believe this person was a white female, petite build, wearing a pink or peach colored shirt and may have blonde or light brown hair. Anyone who may know this person is urged to contact Smyrna Police at 615-459-6644.
