Rutherford County Property Assessor Rob Mitchell told WGNS that someone may be trying to steal your hard earned dollars. Mitchell told WGNS in an email on Thursday:

It was brought to our attention that someone posing as a Rutherford County Assessor's Office Deputy is attempting to extort delinquent tax payments from individuals.

Assessor's Office Employees NEVER collect taxes. The individual who was approached for payment was told if they didn't immediately pay delinquent taxes owed on the property they were renting they would be evicted. Case in point, the property owner did not owe delinquent taxes and even if they did, no county officer from the Assessor's, Trustee's or any other office would directly collect or evict an individual.

If you are contacted in person or by telephone with this type of request; contact local law enforcement immediately and the county office the party is claiming to represent.
