Sound of Summer - Cicadas in RuCo

These large bugs are creating quite a big buzz around Rutherford County...

They are called periodical cicadas and according to experts, they show up every 13 years. They are invading the the area from the west and make a loud buzzing noise.

Cicadas are commonly mistaken for locusts, but are in a different insect order. Experts say cicadas are harmless and do not bite or sting, but may mistake people for trees and try to lay eggs, which may feel similar to a bite or a sting.

Some in the county have told us about a plethora of cicadas in their backyard. Experts say the cicadas are not harmful and should be gone within the next month or two.
