A total of six Rutherford County Schools were affected by what sounded like gun fire on Tuesday morning near Smyrna West Alternative School. The schools in the Smyrna area were placed on lockdown after reports came in that gun shots were heard. The alleged shots were reported near the school and not actually on the campus, according to Rutherford County Schools Spokesperson James Evans.

Evans told WGNS, “The lockdowns were precautionary in nature and were only in place for a few minutes.” The lockdowns were lifted shortly after they were instituted because police determined the sounds were from a construction site near the schools. Parents of the six schools were notified.

Lockdown Affected:

  • Smyrna West Alternative
  • David Youree Elementary
  • Thurman Francis Arts Academy
  • Smyrna Primary
  • Smyrna Middle
  • Smyrna High schools
