According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, allergies are one of the country's most common diseases and more Americans than ever before are suffering from allergies.

Many physicians agree there is a connection between allergies and mood. Allergy-related mood changes can be a result of mild depressive symptoms, like feeling sad, lethargic and fatigued.

Researchers suggest there are several reasons why allergies can affect a person's mood. Studies indicate that disruptions in sleep caused by allergy symptoms such as sneezing and side effects of allergy medications can contribute to irregular sleeping patterns that increase irritability.

"Even just a handful of sleep disruptions each night can result in feelings of imbalance, loss of focus and exhaustion," said Dr. Tobey Schultz, primary care physician at Saint Thomas Health. "To manage mood and energy level, individuals who suffer from allergies should strive to eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep and stay active."
