"While October is most widely known for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we are thrilled to do our part in sharing the power of purple with the community," said Melinda Noblitt, Marketing & Events Manager for Stones River Mall.

The color purple, the purple ribbon and the month of October are nationally recognized activities to create awareness around the issues and services of domestic violence, according to Karen Claud Lampert, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Program & Sexual Assault Services of Rutherford County.

"We know that domestic violence can occur in any home, in any neighborhood and with any race, creed, color, age, or socioeconomic group," Lampert explained. "When we raise awareness, such as with 'Paint the Mall Purple,' we are telling perpetrators that we aren't going to be silent and abuser will be held accountable. We empower victims and survivors through our show of support and unity through the color purple."

She said this year alone, the DVP program anticipates answering over 4,000 crisis line calls, filing 600 Orders of Protection, providing 5,000 shelter bed nights, and utilizing more than 12,000 volunteer hours to provide services and assistance to individuals, families, and children whose lives have been affected by Domestic Violence.

The Domestic Violence Program & Sexual Assault Services of Rutherford County is a non-profit agency that provides emergency services to victims of domestic violence through the operation of a safe shelter, crisis line, counseling, legal advocacy, and linkage to community resources.
