Sunday Morning "Wrong Way Crash" East Bound I-24

Two drivers and a passenger were hospitalized after two vehicles collided around 4:30AM early Sunday morning on I-24 eastbound (toward Murfreesboro). Metro Police describe this as a "wrong way" crash on the interstate near Bell Road.

The driver of a grey Mazda was 24-year old Christian Lopez reportedly got on the wrong lane of I-24 in Rutherford County and traveled for several miles. In fact, police were radioing ahead warning of the situation when the Mazda suddenly crashed head-on with another car. Lope was charged with vehicular assault.

Police report there were two 6-packs of beer in the back=seat of Lopez' car, along with several empty cans in the front-seat.

Miraculously, the two driver and a passenger are all being treated in the Trauma Center at Vanderbilt Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The east bound lane of I-24 (toward Murfreesboro) was closed for several hours while debris was removed from the interstate.
