Tennessee Unemployment Rate Released

The State unemployment rate has declined more than triple the national rate over the past year:

Tennessee Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced Thursday the Tennessee preliminary unemployment rate for July was 4.3 percent, up two-tenths of a percentage point from the June revised rate of 4.1 percent. Even with a slight increase this month, the unemployment rate in Tennessee has declined 1.3 percent since July of 2015, which is more than three times as much as the national rate. The U.S. preliminary rate for July was 4.9 percent, unchanged from the previous month.

  • Non-Farm employment increased 4,800 jobs from June to July. The largest increases occurred in mining/logging/construction, government, & other services.
  • Over the year, seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment increased 58,600 jobs. The largest increases occurred in education/health services, manufacturing, & trade/transportation/utilities.
