Dr. Bryan Terry defeated Adam Coggin and Rick Peppers in the race to replace outgoing State Representative Joe Carr, who ran unsuccessfully against Lamar Alexander for U.S. Senate. Terry received 2,669 votes to Coggin's 2,215. Peppers came in third with 2,126 votes. Terry will take on Democrat Bill Campbell in the state general election in November.

State Representative Mike Sparks held off a challenge from County Commissioner Robert Stevens to win the GOP nomination in the 48th State House race. It was a close race, with Sparks holding only a 70 vote lead after early voting numbers were released. However, election day voting pushed his margin of victory to 352. He received 2,287 votes to Stephens' 1,935. Sparks will face Democrat Mike Williams in a rematch of the general election two years ago.
