Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department (Engines 4, 9, and 10 and Rescues 7 and 9) responded to a two-story townhouse fire at 1043 Sitting Bull Crossing around 3:30 Thursday morning.

Dispatch was getting reports of persons trapped in the back of the home. Fortunately, when crews arrived on scene and were preparing for rescue, they discovered the occupants were outside.

According to Engine 5's Acting Captain Kyle Winnett, the middle unit of the row of townhomes had heavy fire visible from the front and turbulent smoke exiting the back.

Crews extinguished the fire and were able to rescue two dogs and a cat. However, three cats and one other dog did not survive.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Assistant Fire Marshal Michael Bartlett was called to the scene to conduct a routine investigation.

According to Bartlett, it appears that the fire started downstairs. The residents were awakened by their smoke alarms upstairs and were able to make their way outside.

Bartlett says the affected townhome will likely be a total loss. The two adjoining townhomes received only minor smoke and water damage.
