TN Right To Life Says They Appreciate Approval of Resolution Showing Support of Amendment 1

From the TN Right to Life Organization: Tennessee Right to Life expressed deep appreciation to delegates of the Tennessee Baptist Convention who overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging public support for passage of Amendment 1, a proposal placed before state voters in 2014 which would render Tennessee's Constitution neutral on abortion.   The proposed amendment language has been a long time priority for the state's leading Right to Life organization and would overturn a 2000 ruling by the Tennessee Supreme Court which claimed a broader right to abortion in the state Constitution than that recognized by Roe v Wade or the U.S. Constitution.

"Tennessee Baptists reflect the concern of citizens throughout the state that Tennessee's abortion-on-demand policy is so radical that we have become an abortion destination," said Myra Simons, spokeswoman for Tennessee Right to Life.  "Nearly 25% of abortions being reported in Tennessee are sought by women and girls residing someplace else.  People of faith, as represented by Tennessee's Baptists, agree that we can do better and passage of Amendment 1 is the first step toward restoring common sense balance to our state's public policies," Simons said.

Meeting in Chattanooga, convention delegates voted in support of the resolution which urges "all Tennessee Baptists to work vigorously toward the passage of pro-life Amendment 1 in November 2014 as one step toward the protection of life."

"This measure is modest and gives Tennesseans a voice and vote that was taken away by four judges in 2000," said Patty Christian, a convention delegate from Spring Hill.  "Count me among those that think common sense protections for women and girls are the least we can do to make sure Tennessee doesn't remain a top abortion destination."
