TN School Choice Bill Passes Finance Subcommittee

In a historic vote, the House Finance Subcommittee passed the Tennessee Choice & Opportunity Scholarship Act. Having already passed the full Senate last session, the bill will now move on to a vote of the full House Finance Committee.

Beacon CEO Justin Owen stated, "This is a big step in the right direction for this school choice bill that has the potential to help so many Tennessee families. We are excited by the progress of this bill and by the possibility that we will finally give low-income Tennessee children a real opportunity to succeed."

According to the bill, it allows a student attending a Tennessee school for the first time rather than attending a Tennessee public school for the first time to be eligible for an individualized education account, if the student also meets other requirements; allows the department of education to remit funds to individualized education accounts quarterly. - Amends TCA Title 49, Chapter 10, Part 14.
