UPDATE On Major Gas Leak In Smyrna Area

(SMYRNA) Late Tuesday morning (8/27/2019) Atmos Energy worked to repair a major gas leak near the intersection of Old Nashville Highway and Chicken Pike in Smyrna. The immediate area was evacuated and traffic was detoured until a little before 3:00PM.

At 1:15PM Rutherford County Fire Rescue reported that the gas leak in Smyrna has been mitigated. However, the Old Nashville Highway remained closed for another 8-12 hours while repairs were completed.

Earlier Information

Earlier on Tuesday sheriff's deputies evacuated some homes in the immediate area of the leak. However, residents farther out from the location may leave the area if they desire.

Stewartsboro Elementary School was on lock down while homes were being evacuated. Baker Rd at Old Nashville Highway was closed to traffic.

Crews worked until almost midnight Tuesday making final repairs to the gas line.
