New details surrounding the assault on Riverdale football coach Ron Aydelott have been released by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department. Detective Sergeant Dan Goodwin tells NewsRadio WGNS that they do not plan to release the name of the 17-year old student, because he is legally a minor.

Goodwin noted that the student reportedly went to Aydelott's office to turn-in a physical. At that time, words were exchanged and the student left the office.

The five-foot-eight, 246 pound black male then returned shortly afterward and confronted Aydelott, saying "you're trying to play me like a (expletive)". According to the report released by Goodwin, the student pushed the coach while he was seated on a chair, then struck him several times in the face.

Aydelott was initially transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital following the 10:15 a.m. attack. He was then transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His facial injuries required surgery. The coach was sent home from the hospital to recover. The coach suffered a broken jaw, broken nose and broken orbital socket which will require surgery after the swelling goes down.

The junior went before juvenile court on Wednesday afternoon. He was charged with aggravated assault, and will remain in custody until his next hearing on May 20th. During the proceedings it was revealed the teen was before the court a year ago after a reported assault involving his sister. He had been in counseling, which was ordered by the court. That was one reason why the teen was ordered to remain in juvenile detention.

Aydelott has been the head coach at Riverdale since 2006 and is already the second winningest coach in school history with an 82-29 record.
