During the months of June and July, multiple weather related organizations will be in Rutherford County to conduct an atmospheric chemistry study with base operations at the Smyrna Airport.

The included organizations:

  • National Center for Atmospheric Research
  • National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • National Center for Atmospheric Research
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)

The Smyrna study is one of the largest North American air quality studies in decades.

THIS Friday, June 21st, 2013 there will be a public open house (from 11:00-1:00) at the Smyrna airport where the aircraft used for the research (NSF / NCAR C-130, NOAA P-3) will be on display and open for tours along with the team of scientists for a meet and greet session.

The open house will be held at 621 Fitzhugh Blvd. on the Smyrna Airport. This location is at the base of the air traffic control tower where both aircraft will be located.

Questions You May be Curious About on Friday:

Perhaps you could ask: Where does the haze, which gives the Smoky Mountains their name, come from? And can the chemical processes that lead to the haze also help explain why the Southeast hasn't warmed like the rest of the country?
