WGNS typically does not report on stories involving suicide or attempted suicide, however in this case we have been overwhelmed by emails asking what the outcome of the situation was…

On Monday, a 53-year old man climbed onto a sign along Interstate 24 in Murfreesboro threatening to jump into the middle of the roadway in an effort to commit suicide. The situation resulted in police speaking with the subject for several hours which tied up traffic along Old Fort Parkway for some time. Many motorists never realized what was taking place.

A police report filed after the incident took place shows that the man was believed to be highly intoxicated and very upset. As far as what he was upset about was not detailed. Two Murfreesboro officers talked the man down from the sign and he was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center for evaluation. No charges were filed.

If you know of a loved one contemplating suicide, make sure they get the help they need. The suicide prevention hotline is available 24/7. Call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk to a counselor at a Lifeline crisis center near you.
