WGNS continues to follow the topic of school vouchers in Tennessee and reports indicate that Rutherford County lawmakers are still against the idea on a statewide level.

State Representative Joe Carr (Republican of Lascassas) spoke to parents and teachers this past January at a forum hosted by the Rutherford and Murfreesboro education associations…

The proposed school voucher bill (HB 0190, SB 0196) is currently sitting in the finance ways and means subcommittee in the general assembly. Under the current proposal, only children on the free or reduced lunch plan would qualify to receive a scholarship or voucher to attend a private school. Another requirement to be eligible for a voucher is that the student must live in an area that is zoned for a school that has been identified as being in the bottom 5 percent of schools in overall achievement.
