It won't be long until voters will again head to the polls for state and federal general elections and decide races in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne and Eagleville. Voters in Murfreesboro will decide who will fill the City Council seat left vacant with the election of Toby Gilly to General Sessions Judge, Part III. Bill Shacklett and Bill Jones have already announced intentions to run. Others have until Wednesday, September 10th to qualify.

Other municipal elections include mayor and council seats in Smyrna, La Vergne and Eagleville. Area voters will also vote yes or no on the sale of wine in grocery stores, on giving lawmakers more power to regulate abortion in Tennessee and the power to approve or reject gubernatorial appointments to the state's appellate courts.

State and federal elections include locally the Fourth District U.S. Congressional race between Republican incumbent Scott DesJarlais and Democratic challenger Lenda Sherrell along with independent candidate Robert Doggert.

There are two contested races for state House of Representatives seats in the 48th and 49th Districts. Republican Brian Terry won his party's nomination to replace Joe Carr. He'll face off against William Campbell. Republican Mike Sparks in District 49 will face Democrat Mike Williams. This same match up occurred two years ago.
