Three soloists from the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra will be performing as a trio in a free public concert set for 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Hinton Music Hall inside MTSU's Wright Music Building.

Violinist Maria Newman, pianist Wendy Prober and violist Scott Hosfeld will perform “Songs My Grandmother Taught Me,” Newman's composition inspired by her grandmother, the late Mississippi Poet Laureate Louise Moss Montgomery.

The trio also will conduct MTSU School of Music master classes for their instrument specialties beginning at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Wright Music Building.

The daughter of nine-time Academy Award-winning film composer Alfred Newman, Malibu, Calif., composer Newman grew up amidst the sounds of Hollywood, but her Mississippi-born grandmother’s simple lyrical and humorous poetry became her muse. Newman’s compositions and performances have been honored with numerous national and regional commendations and recognitions.

Prober has performed as a pianist throughout the United States and Israel as a critically acclaimed chamber musician and soloist. She is also the principal pianist of the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra.

Hosfeld is conductor and music director of the award-winning Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra. He made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1980 as violist and founder of the Riverside String Quartet and consequently toured Russia, Western Europe and Central and South America with the Val Coeur String Quartet.
