Siegel football coach Greg Wyant resigned Wednesday after leading the Stars' program for the past seven season.

The veteran coach said the bottom line -- the program's record of late -- was an overriding factor in his decision. Siegel ended its season last Friday night with a 49-0 loss at Science Hill in the TSSAA state playoffs.

"We've been 3-7, 3-8, 3-9 the last three years, and the one common denominator has been me, and our success lies on my shoulders," Wyant said. "I haven't been able to get the job done, and it's not fair to these kids.

"(Siegel Principal) Mr. (Larry) Creasy has been good to me. I can leave now and it gives him the opportunity to hire a coach with some energy and get the program back to where it was three or four years ago."

Wyant said he will remain the school's athletic director for now.

"As of right now I'll still be the AD as long as Mr. Creasy will have me," he said. "I think I shocked him this morning when I told him what I was going to do.

"He let me go out on my terms. He let me coach and run the program the way I wanted to and he backed me. I owe a lot of gratitude to him and Mr. Ken Nolan for the opportunity he gave me seven years ago."

Wyant added he hasn't ruled out coaching in the future, but added he has no definitive plans.

"I haven't thought about anything," he said. "I've got three grandkids at home that I want to spend some time with before I make my decision. But being a head coach is really overrated. Being a position coach is where you make relationships with kids."

Wyant led Siegel to a 13-1 record and the semifinals of the state playoffs five seasons ago when the Stars dropped a thrilling game to Maryville. He also had eight-win seasons in 2001 and 2013.
