LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WGNS News) - A weekend domestic assault investigation in La Vergne led to the arrest of a woman accused of assaulting her juvenile child and attempting to take the child’s life, according to the La Vergne Police Department.
Police said second- and third-shift officers responded to a La Vergne residence regarding an active domestic assault involving a juvenile. When officers arrived, they found the juvenile with visible injuries and immediately began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to police, information gathered at the scene indicated the juvenile had allegedly been assaulted by his mother and that the incident escalated into an alleged attempt to take the juvenile’s life. Officers moved the child to a safe location, but police said the situation at the residence remained active.
Investigators said the mother, who officers determined was intoxicated, barricaded herself alone inside the residence. Police also learned that she had allegedly made statements threatening to set the home on fire and harm herself. Because of the potential danger to the woman, responding officers and nearby residents, officers made the decision to force their way into the residence. She was taken into custody shortly after officers entered.
The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services responded to assist authorities and help ensure the continued safety and well-being of the juvenile.
The woman was transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. Police said she was charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse, Felony Reckless Endangerment, two counts of Aggravated Domestic Assault, and Resisting Arrest. Her bond was set at $950,000.
La Vergne Police praised the officers involved in the response, noting that they were confronted with a serious and rapidly developing situation. The department said the officers’ priorities were protecting the juvenile, safely resolving the incident and preventing additional harm to people in the surrounding community.
Police emphasized that protecting children remains a priority for the department. Authorities said no additional identifying information will be released out of respect for the juvenile victim and the child’s privacy.
